Dame Monica Gallagher DBE DCSG CEP was an Australian community worker and Roman Catholic Church activist.
Monica Josephine McInerney was born on 5th April 1923 in Sydney's western suburbs, New South Wales, Australia. She was the second daughter of James McInerney and Mary Lehane. [1]
Monica married Doctor John Gallagher, a Willoughby physician, in 1946 in Sydney's western suburbs. [2] The couple subsequently had four children: Paul, Brian, Julia and Mary-Louise.

In the Queen's Birthday Honours 1976 Monica was created Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE). [3]
She was awarded a Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice papal honour in 1981 and named Dame Commander of the Order of St Gregory the Great (DCSG) in 2001.
John, who received a Papal knighthood in 1976, predeceased his wife. Aged ninety years, Monica passed away on 18th September 2013. Pontifical Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial was conducted in the St Leonards Catholic Church, Naremburn, following which her remains were interred in Macquarie Park Cemetery, North Ryde. [4]
