Biography

Samuel was born about 1736. Samuel McKeown ...

The County Naturalization records of Chester Co., SC lists Samuel McKeown a native of Ireland, residing in the U.S. between 18 Jun1798 and 14 Apr 1802[1]

"The McKeowns that first arrived in Chester & Fairfield counties in SC were from County Antrim, Donegal, Cavon, and Ulster Province. There were several different families that came over at different times in 1759, 1762, 1767, and 1773. Some spelled their name McKeown and others McKown, they all claimed to be related. Some of the families settled in Fairfield County on Little River (creek), some in Chester County on Little River (the same stream), and others settled on Rocky Creek in Chester County".

"The Mckeowns men were of a mechanical nature. They worked with wood and iron and made anything from a water pail to house furniture, and even made corn mills. They bought the mill rocks, then made the gearing. They made mills for water power and some for hand power, I remember a land mill that was named by Sherman"

"Samuel Sr. landed in Charleston in 1767 having made the voyage from Ireland in the "Earl of Donegal", Commander Dunkin Fergusen. He came up to Fairfield Count and settled West of Woodward, SC on Little River (creek)"
