Biography

My father told me that his father (John McLaughlan) mentioned Lockerbie & Lochness which had eels in it or the like. He also mentioned that, according to his father, they never lived in one place for long. It is speculated that they moved to where his father could find work. It is possible that his siblings were born in different places. One of which is Patrick McLaughlin who was born in 1900

Exact date of arrival in South Africa is unknown. Parents are Thomas and Annie McLaughlin.

He served as a guard at Koffiefontien at the time of the interment of late Prime Minister Balthazar Johannes Vorster (1942 - 1944). Rented a small holding (& farmed) in Katbschlaagte in the Transvaal.

The owner of the farm was Jan 'Rooie' Cronje. Mr Cronje sold portions of the farm Katboslaagte which was small compared to the surrounding farms. He lived on the last portion of the farm which had a railway line cutting it in half. Mr Cronje lived north of the railroad. The portion south of the railroad was rented by John McLaughlan.

I suspect that the McLaughlans and Coetzers shared the same portion.

He is buried at Jakopskop Cemetery in Vereeniging.

It is possible that John may have been a Freemason.
