Biography

Joseph Patrick McNamara was born 28 April 1887 in Lower River Inhabitants, Richmond County, Nova Scotia, Canada. He is the son of Michael Benjamin McNamara (1860-1948) and Catherine (Delaney) McNamara (1860-1944).

Joseph was a student when he enlisted in the Canadian Army on 21 March 1916 in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He served in the 85th Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders). He sailed overseas from Halifax in October 1916 on the S.S. Olympic. He landed in France on 1 March 1918 and was killed in action there on 29 April 1918. He is buried at Roclincourt Military Cemetery in Pas de Calais, France.

Some errors appear in the transcription of the Canadian Virtual War Memorial record. The birth date (and age) is incorrect, and the unit appears to be incorrect.
