Mary McNamara was born on 24 January 1873 at Kilcullane, County Limerick, Ireland. She was the daughter of Michael McNamara and Joanna Horan[1].
Mary Josephine McNamara was baptised on 24 January 1873. The baptism is recorded in the Catholic Parish Registers of Hospital and Herbertstown, Diocese of Cashel and Emly. [2]
On 13 October 1895, Mary Josephine McNamara, identified as the niece of the Reverend John Horan of Bacchus Marsh, and a native of Ireland, was professed into the order of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart at St Joseph's Convent, Mount Street, North Sydney. She adopted the religious name of Sister Mary Idus[3].
On 8 February 1922, Mary "Josephine" McNamara died in Victoria, Australia[4] and was buried at Boroondara Cemetery[5][6].
Obituary
"Sister M. Idus, of St. Joseph's, Providence, East Melbourne, died on February 8. The deceased nun was a native of Limerick, Ireland, and a niece of the late Rev. D. Horan. She came to Australia in 1890, and after spending some time as a boarder in St. Joseph's Convent, Bacchus Marsh, embraced the religious life, in which she laboured with zeal and devotion for 30 years, teaching in New Zealand, New South Wales, and later in Victoria. -R.I. P."[7]
