Joseph Francis McQuaid was born on 11 March 1872 in Kingston, Ontario[1]. He was the son of carpenter John McQuaid and Mary Killeen.
He’s listed as 9 years old on the 1881 Canadian Census, living with his parents and siblings in Kingston.[2]
He married Agnes Odelia Short on 15 September 1903 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Kingston, Ontario[3].
On the 1911 Canadian Census, he is living in Kingston, listed as a Laborer, his wife is called Adelia, they have 3 children, and his father John is also in the household.[4]
Joseph, his wife, and children immigrated to the United States in the early 1920s, coming first to Rochester, New York, and settling in Buffalo, New York.
Joseph is found on the 1930 U.S. Census with his wife and daughter Mildred, living at 448 14th St. in Buffalo, NY[5]. His father is recorded as born in Ireland and his mother in Canada, which is consistent with other records, and it says he immigrated to the U.S. in 1921 and is in the process of being naturalized. The family rents and has a radio set. The owner of the home Joseph Calabrese also resides at the same address with his wife Jennie, both born in New York and parents born in Italy.
He passed away on 21 June 1934 in Buffalo, New York.[6] He was buried at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery in his native Kingston.[7]
Several of his descendants have taken a DNA test, including his grandson Jim. This confirmed the identity of his parents via DNA[8].
