Mrs. Mary Ann Gregg, whose memories of New Zealand life went back over 70 years, died in Gisborne this morning.
Born in County Deer, Aberdeen, 84 years ago, Mrs. Gregg came with her parents as a girl of 14 years in the sailing ship Margaret Gilbeth, which berthed at Port Chalmers. Her early life was spent in the South Island, and she married the late Mr. Andrew Gregg in Dunedin 65 years ago. They came to Gisborne two years later, when settlement in the district was still sparse and when there was no bridge across the Turanganui River.
Mr. Gregg ran the ferry across the Turanganui River for some time, and he was responsible for the first beautification work that was undertaken on Read’s quay. Both took an active part in the life of the town in the early days.
Enjoying good health until recently, Mrs. Gregg had a brief illness. Her death is mourned by three daughters and two sons, the family comprising ; Mrs. S. Bardswell, Gisborne; Mrs. A. Craig, Hokitika; Mrs. J. Kinnimont, Hastings; Messrs. W. and E. Gregg, Australia. Mr. Andrew Gregg died in 1914.
Following a service in Cochrane’s private chapel at 1.45 p.m. to-morrow, the funeral will leave for the Makaraka cemetery.
In her will, Mary Ann Gregg appointed her daughter Jean Bardwell, the sole executrix. Jean's son Harold Bardwell, was bequeathed furniture, but there was no mention of any of the other Gregg children, most who were still living at the time. [5]
Mary Ann Gregg was buried at Makaraka Cemetery in Gisborne, Poverty Bay, New Zealand on the 11th of October 1939. [6]
