Col John McWhorter, son of Henry and Mary Fields McWhorter born April 28 1784 and died April 14 1880 in Rush Run, Lewis County,[1] He was a lawyer after his service in the War of 1812, a judge for Lewis and Braxton County, West Virginia and in his old an ordained minister in the M. E. Church on Rush Run, Lewis County, West Virginia. He never married. In the following reference there is an overview of his life and work as a Captain to Colonel in the military, the legislature, lawyer, judge and finally as a local minister in the Rush Run M. E. Church he helped build.[2][3]
Research Note
The biographical image by Dennis McWhorter on the findagrave memorial[4] cites Minnie McWhorter who stated he was a "bachelor all his life", his death record says he was single and died in February not April as stated in Lucullus McWhorter's work cited above. The death record does say that L S Ward, son-in-law was the informant. On the marriage bond record of Margaret McWhorter, Henry McWhorter, her grandfather, is bonded with Leonard S Ward and John signed it at the bottom and identifies her as his daughter.[5]
According to the 1870 United State Census record, John was living in household of his daughter, Margaret, and her family along with his partner Delilah McWhorter when they were in their 80's.
