Biography

John Praught and Sarah McPhee obtained a marriage license on 27 May 1797 in Prince Edward Island.[1]

John and Sarah allegedly farmed initially near the present location of St Joachim Church at Vernon River, but unable to get a clear title, moved to Mount Mellick, Lot 49, in 1822. A few years later, on August 8, 1826, John died while his family was still young. Sarah Praught, a widow with 11 children, petitioned to be administrator of his estate. [2]

Although John was raised an Anglican, Sarah appears to have been Roman Catholic, as their children were raised Catholic. They had a family of eleven, nine boys and two girls and ninety-seven known grandchildren. [3]
