Biography

John was born in 1866 at Creevagh More, Quin, Co. Clare, Ireland. John Meaney was baptised on 11th November 1866 in Quin, Co Clare. He worked as a Tramway employee, and on 25th October 1899 married Bridget Nihill, in St Patrick's Church in Sydney. .. He passed away in 1919, after a serious operation for gallstones.

John's Father was a Farmer at Creevagh Mor, unable to sign his name on the birth certificate.

Irish Birth Certificate No 191, in the District of Quin, Superintendent Registrar's District of Tulla, Co. Clare confirms the details. The date of the registration of the birth is 1866.

The marriage of John, aged 31 to Mary McNamara, aged 27, was registered in Sydney NSW Australia, occurring on 25th October 1899, in St Patrick's Church, and records John's occupation as a Tram Guard, and Mary's as Home Duties.

The marriage certificate records John's father as Michael Meaney, a Farmer of Clare, Ireland, and Bridget Nihill, and Mary's father Denis McNamara, a farmer, and Emily Hennessey, also of Clare, Ireland. Brigit Meaney witnessed the record, with Patrick Baine. Registration no. 1836.

John died in Sydney on 19th June 1919, at St Vincent's Hospital, late of Arden Street, Randwick, aged 51 years. Cause of death is listed as gallstones, peritonitis (signed by Hugh Hunter, registrar). The informant was John's brother, Thomas Meaney. John was buried in Waverley Cemetery. The certificate states that John was born in Co. Clare, Ireland, and lived 31 years in NSW, that he married Mary McNamara at age 33, and lists the six children of Mary and John.

The obituary indicates that John was a native of County Clare, Ireland, and was about 52 years of age at his death, having worked for the Tramways for 30 years. He came to Sydney about 32 years before his death. The chief mourners were Mary Meaney (widow), Mr P.F. Meaney and Mr Thomas Meaney, brothers, Mrs M. Mulqueeney and Mrs J Cannane, sisters, and Mrs A Meaney, sister-in-law. He had lived at "Ascot", Arden Street, Randwick. His coffin was carried by members of the H.A.C.B. Society.
