Biography

Volga German
Kate (Meisner) Fritzler was a Volga German.

Katharina Elisabeth "Kate" Meisner was born on 17 Nov 1885 in Grimm, Volga, Russia to Alexander Meisner and Katharina Elisabeth (Fritzler) Meisner.

She was baptized by Pastor Diggler in Grimm. Katharina Elisabeth was confirmed by Pastor Stahl in Grimm in May 1900.[1]

She married Friedrich Fritzler on 27 Dec 1904 in Grimm, Russia. They had three recorded children born in Russia, one having died in Russia.

In early 1907, Fred's brother Jake Fritzler sent $300 to Russia for steamship tickets. They left Grimm, Russia, on March 5 with two small children to Liverpool, England.[2] On 4 Apr 1907, they immigrated to America with two small children with $5 in their pockets. They departed from Liverpool, England via S.S. Noordland[3] arriving in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 18 Apr 1907, after a 14-day ship voyage. [4]

Their three-month old infant Friedrich Jr. died at the Philadelphia hospital on 29 Apr due to bronchitis and athrepsia or marasmus which is extreme malnutrition and wasting of muscle and tissue.[5] Their infant son was buried in a new country and different state than they were bound to settle. He was buried at Glenwood Cemetery in Philadelphia.[6] Following their grief and burial, they took the train bound for Windsor, Colorado about 5 May 1907.

By 1910, Fred was a laborer on the railroad and they lived in rural La Salle, Colorado.[7]

Fred and Katherine lived in Monte Vista, Colorado, from 1911-1912 while he helped construct the sugar factory.[8] On 14 Sep 1911, their first child Paul, died at age six and is buried in Monte Vista.[9]

By 1916, they moved to their farm and home in La Grange.[10][11]

In 1954, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.[8] Fred passed away in 1961. Katherine remained on the farm until about 1968, and then moved to Kenton Manor in Greeley.

Katherine Fritzler passed away at age 86 on 2 Jun 1972 in the Weld County Hospital in Greeley, Colorado.[12][13] She is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Windsor, Colorado.[14]

Published AHSGR submission

Excerpt of Black Velvet Homes by Paul Fritzler[2]
"My father's brother, Jacob Fritzler, and his family migrated from Grimm, Russia, to Windsor, Colorado. As soon as they arrived in 1902, they began to work in the sugar beet fields. Two or three years later Jacob had earned enough money to buy a lot. He went to the lumber yard, purchased a few 2 by 4s and foot boards and built a two-room beet shanty. These were approximately 12 or 14 feet wide and 24 to 28 feet long. They had a rounded roof and were covered on the outside with black tar paper to keep the wind from blowing in one side and out the other.
Later he wrote a letter back to his family in Russia and told them he was living in a "black velvet" house. Can you imagine how much excitement that stirred up among those people? They thought he was living in Utopia.
In the early part of 1907, Uncle Jake sent my parents $300 for steamship tickets so they could come to the United States, They left Grimm, Russia, on March 5 with two small children. Exactly two months later, on May 5, 1907, they arrived at the Windsor depot..."
