William Melville was born in the Colony of South Australia (1836-1900)

William Kennedy Daniel Melville, son of David Cross Melville (abt.1848-1890) and Ellen (Kennedy) Melville (1852-1938), was born on 30 September 1878 in Rosewater, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.^[1][2]

William Melville married Ellen Mary Davenport in Victoria, Australia in 1900.^[3] Their child was:

Ellen died at age 23 in 1904 in South Melbourne, Victoria, Australia^[5] and William next married Delilah Garner in 1915.^[6] Their children were:

• Phyllis Melville (1915-1916)^[7]
• Cyril Johnathon Melville (1916-)^[8]
• Hazel Veronica Melville (1918-1918)^[9][10]

In 1903, William was living at 175 Dorcas Street, South Melbourne, occupation Tinsmith, with his wife Ellen (as "Nellie") and mother Ellen.^[11] In 1905, after the death of his wife, William was listed alone at 175 Dorcas Street. From 1912 until his marriage to Delilah in 1915, William was at 250 Hanna street, South Melbourne with his mother Ellen, along with his sister Elleanor Theresa until 1913.^[12] After his marriage to Delilah in 1915 until his death in 1937 he and Delilah were at 2 Raglan Place, South Melbourne.^[13] From 1915, William used "David Kennedy" in his name in place of "Kennedy Daniel"

William Melville, occupation Tinsmith, died on 26 March 1937 in Prince Henry's Hospital, St Kilda Rd, South Melbourne, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia at age 58.^[14][15] His father was identified as David Cross Melville on his death registration. Probate was granted on William's estate a month later on 23 April 1937.^[16]

South Australian Births have the name order as "Kennedy William Daniel Melville", Victorian marriage has "William Daniel Kennedy Melville", earlier Australian Electoral Rolls have "William Kennedy Daniel Melville", while later ones have "William David Kennedy Melville", and his Victorian death registration has "William David Kennedy Melville".
