Biography

NAME: Beulah Mendenhall FATHER: Samuel Mendenhall MOTHER: Mary Baily BIRTH DATE: 1771 CITY: Kennett STATE: PA COUNTRY: USA

She married Mark Carleton outside of the Quaker faith and caused some distress:

"Complaint is made of Beulah Carlton formerly Mendenhall for keeping company with & marrying a man not in Membership. [illegible] & accomplishing her marriage with him by the assistance of a Magistrate; Therefore this meeting appoints Jas Bennet, Jacob Pierce, & Amon Harry(?) to convince her of the inconsistency of her conduct & [illegible] they find cause to forbear prepare a Testimony inform her thereof & produce it to next meeting; & inspect how clear her Mother stands from convincing at her conduct herein."

The couple moved to Ohio afterwards and joined a Meeting there with this recommendation:

"To Pennfield Monthy Meeting of friends in the state of Ohio; Dear friends the copy of a Minute of your "Meeting of the twenty second of the seventh month as it relates to Mark Carleton & Beulah his Wife was received & accepted & on inquiry being made no obstruction appears we therefore recommend them members of our Religious Society to your friendly care & notice signed in & on behalf of Kennett Monthy Meeting Pensylvania held the [illegible] on 1819 by Stephen Webb & Elizabeth Way [illegible] time."
