Death

Accident scene, 1978.
Crash Fatal to Corpus Man
Candido Soto Mendieta, 66-year-old retired Corpus Christi brewery employee, was killed instantly Wednesday morning when his pickup truck was struck broadside by a truck-tractor and semitrailer after the pickup truck slid out of control on rainslick U. S. Highway 77 on the Refugio County side of the San Antonio River bridge.
Mendieta was the father of Hector Mendieta of Victoria.
State Trooper Gary McBroom of Victoria, who assisted Trooper Mike O'Brien of Refugio with the investigation, said Mendieta was southbound when his pickup truck went out of control and "fishtailed" into the path of the empty van truck being driven north by Ronald Ranes, 42, of Highlands, Texas.
The impact sheared off the bed of the pickup truck, dropping it on the opposite side of the roadway from where the main wreckage came to rest.
Ranes escaped injury in the crash which occurred at approximately 10:15 a.m. during a light rainshower.
The accident occurred a short time after and .3 of a mile away from where the second of two trailers being pulled by a truck driven by Ken Williams of Houston-overturned as a result of the rainslick conditions. Williams escaped injury.
Justice of the Peace Richard Martinez of 1 Tivoli held an inquest at the scene.
Mendieta's body was taken to Moore Funeral Home in Refugio and then to Angelus Funeral Home in Corpus Christi.
Mendieta was born April 21, 1912, in Realitos, Texas, but had resided most of his life, in Corpus Christi where he had worked 33 years for Jax Brewing Co. before his retirement. He was a veteran of World War II.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Kelsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Corpus Christi with burial in Rosehill Memorial Park.
Also surviving are his wife, Mrs. Maria Mendieta; another son, Gilbert Mendieta; a sister, Mrs. Estella Salinas, and two brothers, Macedonio and Ezequiel L Mendieta, all of Corpus Christi, and two grandchildren.[8]
