Mary was born in 1825. She was the daughter of John Meredith and Mary Ann Powick.

Her father died some time before 1838.

She emigrated from England to New Zealand with her mother Mary Ann, stepfather William Jones, adopted sister Mary Ellen and half sister Ellen. The ship they sailed on was the “Fifeshire”^[1] . Some time about 20 September 1841, the emigrants made their way on board. The ship then made its way down the Thames to Gravesend, towards the mouth of the river. From there it sailed around the coast to the port of Deal. Originally it was to set sail from there on Sunday, 26 September 1841, for some reason it was delayed and did not get under way until Saturday, 2 October. For the duration of the voyage 14 year old Mary Ann Meredith acted as servant to a Mrs White.

An outbreak of fever occurred during the voyage and as a result of this and other diseases a total of 16 people died on board the ship, including two babies born on board. One of these was a baby girl born to her mother Mary Ann Jones on 13 January 1842, who died after only 28 hours. Sadly on 22 October 1841, her half sister Ellen Jones died aged six months, of “water on the head”. Then on 16 January 1842, just as they arrived at New Zealand, her adopted sister Mary Ellen Jones died, aged eight of a “putrid sore throat”.

At about 4 o'clock in the afternoon of Thursday, 20 January 1842, the “Fifeshire” entered the harbour at Wellington in the North Island of New Zealand, having that day sailed through Cook Strait. The reason they went to Wellington first was that they simply did not know where Nelson was. On Thursday, 27 January 1842, after a stay of a week in Wellington, the “Fifeshire” set sail for Nelson in the South Island, arriving in the early hours of Tuesday, 1 February 1842. As the "Fifeshire" was sailing into Nelson Haven she was greeted by gun salute organised by the small group of people had arrived on an earlier voyage to organize the settlement.

Of the family of five who had left England four months previously, only three had survived the journey; Mary Ann, her stepfather William Jones and her mother Mary Ann Jones.

Mary married John Cargill in 1838 in Nelson, Marlborough.

They had four children.

Mary married, secondly, James Mudford on 11 May 1855 in Nelson, Marlborough.

They went on to have 8 children.

She passed away in 1909 at the age of 84.
