Biography

This person and the creation of this profile and the research associated is part of an attempt to identify all the descendants of a George Zacharias Hatstat (Hattstatt-1), who was a Prussian soldier hired by the British to fight against the American colonists in the American Revolutionary War. George's British transport ship (The Favourite) was captured near Boston Harbor and he was sent to a POW camp 1st in Boston and then in Rutland, Massachusetts. After the war he married a local girl and raised a large family in and around Petersham, Massachusetts. George is believed to be the 1st Hatstat in the America's. This Norman Merriam is a grandson of that George.

Source 1: The 1855 Massachusetts state census finds this Norman Merriam as a 53yr old farmer living in New Salem, Franklin, Massachusetts in a household headed by his step-father Lincoln Merriam and also containing his mother Lucy, his brother Cyrus and a Susan, who we believe to possibly be Cyrus's wife.

Source 2: This person is found in the 1865 Massachusetts census living with his parents, (step-father Joshua and mother Lucy), in New Salem, MA. He is a widower aged 63 at this time, and listed as a farmer, born in New Salem as well.

Source 3: A record of the death of this Norman Merriam who died May 16, 1882 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio. This record says he was born in Massachusetts. NOTE: We also find that his daughter, Catherine C. (Merriam) Osgood died in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Ohio so we are sure this is the correct Norman Merriam.
