Richard Merriman was born before 1644, likely in England.[1] The passage of Richard and his (perhaps second) wife, from (presumably) England to Lancaster County, Virginia Colony, was provided by George Vezey, Nathaniel Browne, and Stephen Tomlin prior to 1 Nov 1664.[2] Among other persons transported at the time were Christopher Young, Robert Stagg, John Penn, Ann and William Price, Mary West, John Copping, and Rabecca Patent.[3]
Richard was assessed in Lancaster County, 22 Nov 1668, for seven tithables on the county’s "northside,"[4]i.e., the part of the county that was then north of the Rappahannock River.[5]

↑ The year 1644 is extrapolated from the fact that he was transported to Virginia in 1644 as part of a headright and would presumably have been at least age 21 at the time. ↑ Lancaster County today lies entirely north of the Rappahannock River. Until 1669, in which year Middlesex County was formed, Lancaster County straddled the river, thus leading the assessors to differentiate between the county's north and south sides. Sources:
