Biography

Sarah Merritt was born around 1730 estimated from census data and the ages of her children and husband. She resided in Halifax County, North Carolina based on census data and the will and deed records of her husband Richard Merritt. Based on the ages of her children she married around 1750. She is listed in the 1790 and 1800 Haflifax, North Carolina census. A deed dividing her property to her surviving children is dated 1810 so she probably died in 1809 in Halifax County, North Carolina. The heirs listed in the deed were: Elisha Shamwell in right of his wife (assumed to be Mary but not named), Richard Merritt, Amy Sayres (Sears?), Isaac Sullivant in right of his wife (assumed to be Euridice but not named), Nancy (called Ann in her father's will) Merritt, Sarah Pittman.
