Biography

Joseph Francis Meyer was born on 07 December 1865, ^[1] in Croswell, Sanilac, Michigan, United States. ^[2] At the time Joseph was born, Croswell was Davisville, which has been used in Wikitree. The name changed to Croswell in 1877. He died on 11 August 1942, in Lexington, Sanilac, Michigan, United States, 76 years, 8 months and 5 days old. ^[1] old and is buried at Lexington Municipal Cemetery, alongside his wife, although the obituary included in his Find a Grave entry states that he was buried in St Denis Catholic Cemetery. ^[2] He was the son of Michael Meyer (abt 1827-1896) & Anna Marie Wagner (1827-abt 1900). ^[1]

There were 10 children in the family, all born in Michigan. In the 1870 census ^[3] all are listed except for Catherine who was born around 1856. She appears in the 1860 ^[4] & the 1880 ^[5] censuses. The birth years that can be calculated from the ages given in the 1870 census vary in some instances from what has been found in other information. As well, the names/ages for Minnie and Milly (Amelia) were switched in the 1870 census. Apart from that, Caroline appears as Charlotte. In the 1880 census, she appears as Caroline. It is not clear whether her name is Caroline or Charlotte, but she has been included as Caroline in Wikitree.

Joseph's parents moved to Lexington from Croswell (then Davisville) when he was a small boy. He was engaged in the hardware business, beginning in 1900. As a lifetime resident of the county and a prominent business man of Lexington, he participated in the civic and business life of the town for years and at the time of his death was a member of the Lions club, had served on the school board and for about 20 years was head of the fire department. He was an active church worker. ^[2]

Joseph married Leonora Winifred Hykes (1868-1938) on 03 May 1893, in Croswell, Sanilac, Michigan, United States. ^[6] The marriage ended with Leonora's death on 29 June 1938, in Lexington, Sanilac, Michigan, United States, at the age of 70 yrs. old. ^[7] He died 4 years later in 1942. ^[1] Joseph Francis and Leonora had at least 3 children.

Eloise Meyer

In the 1910 Census, ^[8] Eloise Meyer is listed, born around 1903 in Michigan, United States. The name "Eloise" subsequently disappears, and in 1920, Kathryn Leonora Meyer is listed, born around 1903 in Michigan, United States. ^[9] Kathryn Leonora has a birth certificate, and she appears as Lenore Meyers born in 1902 in Lexington Township, Sanilac, Michigan, United States. ^[10] In the 1930 census, she appears as "Kathryn", born around 1903 in Michigan. ^[11] Incidentally, Kathryn married Wallace W Kipp (c.1899 - c.1974), in 1929, in Lexington, Sanilac, Michigan, United States, She died around 1990 in Sanilac Medical Care Facility Sandusky, Sanilac, Michigan, United States. She was the last surviving child of the Joseph Francis Meyer-Leonora Winifred Hykes family. ^[12] In any event the name Eloise, which appears to be an error, pops up again, see "Rebecca".

Frederick F Meyer

Frederick was born around 1903 in Michigan, United States, and died around 1984 in Michigan, United States. He married Viola Unknown (c. 1905-c. 1974) and had at least one child, Frederick Francis Meyer (c. 1930 - c.1995). ^[13]

Rebecca Meyer

Rebecca does not appear in the censuses, but she was born 28 Dec 1893 in Lexington, Sanilac, Michigan, United States. ^[14] The fact that she does not appear in the 1900 census probably indicates that she died before 01 June 1900 ^[15] although a death certificate was not located. However, a Find a Grave Index entry was discovered for an Eloise Meyer (see "Kathryn"), ^[16] who was born the same day as Rebecca, 28 December 1893, and who died 25 March 1898. She is buried in St. Denis Cemetery in Lexington. The tombstone shown does not give any indication that there are twins buried there, so it is reasonable to expect that Rebecca and Eloise are one and the same person. Perhaps, in the 1910 census, whoever gave the data, confused one child's name with the other's, which is why Eloise (Rebecca) is mentioned after her death, instead of Kathryn, who was alive.

Apr 1930 Joseph Francis appeared in the 1930 Census, 30 April 1930 at Lexington, Sanilac, Michigan, United States, "Joseph Meyer", 65 yrs., born in Michigan, Hardwareman, Hardware, with his wife "Leonora Meyer", 62 yrs., born in Michigan and 1 daughter (Kathryn Kipp) ^[11] Note: in the census image, Joseph lives next to his son Frederick and family. His daughter Kathryn's married name is Kipp, there is a Kipp mother and son heading the page.
