Biography

Miller, Glen R., son of Lewis J. and Sarah (Stutzman) Miller, was born at Wellman, Iowa, May 6, 1902; died of heart failure at Goshen, Ind., Dec. 1, 1980; aged 78 y. On Dec. 24, 1926 he was married to Pearl K. Klopfenstein, who survives. Also surviving are 2 sons (John, Keith, and Jerold). He was a member of College Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held on Dec 4. in charge of Arnold C. Ruth and John Mosemann; interment in Violett Cemetery, Goshen.

A memorial service for Glen R Miller, 76, professor emeritus of chemistry of Goshen College and the father of John K Miller of Wakarusa, will be held Thursday in the College Mennonite Church at Goshen at 10:30 am with the Rev Arnold Roth, pastor, and the Rev John H Moseman, former pastor, officiating. Private burial services will be held in Violett Cemetery.

Dr Miller died Monday morning in Goshen General Hospital after being admitted with apparent heart problems. He had heen in failing health about three weeks.

Dr Miller was born May 6, 1902, at Wellman, Iowa, where he lived for a number of years. He received his BA degree with Hesston College, Kan, in 1924; his MS in 1925 and his PhD in 1930, both from the State University of Iowa. He married Pearl K Klopfenstein on Dec 24, 1926.

He had a long and active career in education and within the Mennonite church. He was a grade school teacher early in his teaching career and served as professor of chemistry at Goshen College from 1925 until his retirement in 1966. During this time he taught one year in 1957 – 1958 at Purdue University Extension in Fort Wayne and taught at the National Science Institute at Mankato State College, Minn, in 1959.

From 1944 to 1945, he was director of the Mennonite Central Committee’s relief program in England, and during 1962 – 1963 he served with the Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities in Ghana, Africa. Last year, Dr Miller published a book, “The Deer Creek Story” a book of his early family members. Dr Miller was a member of the Goshen Rotary Club and the College Mennonite Church.

Survivors include Mrs Miller; another son, L Jerold Miller, New Wilmington, Pa; and four grandchildren. A brother, Wallace, and a sister, Mrs Wilma Erb, preceded him in death.
