Biography

Charles Anthony Herbert Mills was born at 5.30am on 21.1.1875 at Wivenhoe, Essex to parents William Munson and Mahala Mills (nee Kent). He was one of twins (his twin sister being Grace).

South Australia

Charles travelled to South Australia with his parents and siblings onboard the ship Woodlark in 1879. He was 3 years old during the journey.

Musical ability

Charles inherited his mother’s musical ability by having a bass baritone voice. He was a member of the original Adelaide Orpheus Society Choir, commencing as a choir boy at Christ Church in North Adelaide.

Employment

Charles was an accountant and started work with William Haughton and Co on Currie Street in Adelaide.

Western Australia

Charles left South Australia in 1897 and moved to Northam in Western Australia to work for the firm Connor, Doherty and Durak Ltd. He resigned in 1905 to join another firm and on the death of the head of the firm, took over the firm in his own name.

Marriage

Charles married Maud Millicent Forward on 29.4.1914 at Northam, Western Australia.

They had two children, William Munson (1917) and Margaret Emily Mahala (1921).

Later Life

Charles became the district agent for John Robinson and Son, and Massey Harris Machinery Company. He stayed with Massey Harris until his retirement.

Charles would remain in the Northam region for the rest of his life. He sang in the church at Northam, WA, for 50 years.

Death

Charles died on 15.7.1954 in Northam, Western Australia. He was buried in Northam.
