Clara Mills was born in about 1835 and was baptised on 3 January 1836 at St John the Baptist, Egham, Surrey[1]. She was the daughter of Henry Mills, a Builder of Egham, and his wife Mary Harris.

At the age of 23 Clara married 23 year old Walter Adlard (the son of Frederick Adlard, a Merchant Tailor) on 30 June 1859 at the Parish Church Chertsey, Surrey, by licence[2]. Walter was a Gentleman of Windsor Street; Clara was a Spinster of Egham. The witnesses were her brother in law W. A. Herring, Henry Mills, Frederick Adlard and one other.

MARRIAGE.- The marriage of Miss Clara Mills (5th daughter of Mr. Henry Mills, or Egham) and Walter Adlard, Esq., of London, was solemnized on Thursday morning at the parish church of this town by the Rev. W. L. Till, the vicar. The bride was accompanied to the altar by six bridesmaids and a large circle of relatives and friends. After the ceremony was performed the bride and bridegroom, accompanied by their friends, were driven in six carriages and pairs to the residence of the bride's father, where they partook of the wedding breakfast. The bride, being a niece of Mr. Richard Harris of this town, and sister-in-law to Mr. W. Herring, one of the churchwardens, caused considerable interest to be taken in the affairs of many of the inhabitants.[4]
They went on to have three sons born in India:

Henry Frederick Adlard (b. 21 Aug 1869 Lahore, Bengal, India, d. 1957)
By 1891, Clara Adlard (aged 55) and her husband Walter Adlard (54 and retired) had returned to live in England, and were recorded at 3 Park Road, Willesden, Hendon, Middlesex, England. Also in the household was their son Henry F Adlard (21 and a Stationer's Apprentice), her widowed father in law Frederick Adlard (81 and a retired Tailor), one visitor and one servant.
Now a widow, 75 year old Clara Adlard was recorded in the household of her married son Henry Frederick Adlard (41), his wife Lottie Harrie Adlard (28) and their son Aubrey Adlard (4) at 7 St Marys Road Willesden N W, Willesden, Middlesex, England in the 1911 England Census.
Clara was living at Corona Braiswick, Colchester, Essex when she passed away on 19 September 1929[5]. Her Will was proved on 29 November 1929 at Ipswich to her son Norman Clarke Adlard, gentleman and William Alfred Francis, solicitor[6]. Effects: £1778 15s. 4d.
