He was the postmaster of Brightwater, Arkansa and also managed the Mercantile store of J. S. Dickson.[5] He and Marietta took in a Baby, Cora E. Hill at two days old, and raised her as their own. She is on the 1870 Census at age 3 in their home, along with a servant. William was managing the Dry Goods Store.[6] They had no other children.
He died on February 2, 1897, at the age of 43, and was buried in Pea Ridge, Arkansas in the Buttram Chapel Cemetery.[1]
Note
Phebe (Buttram) Pitts of Pea Ridge related an interesting story about her beloved Uncle bill Miser, He was "courting" Marietta V. Pickens and went to call on her one Sunday afternoon at the home of her brother, Capt. Cyrus Pickens, a veteran of the Civil War from Pea Ridge. After a pleasant afternoon with Marietta, he suddenly realized he had stayed much too long. Uncle Bill Miser hurried to leave the Pickens' home and ran out to get his saddle horse to make a fast exit from the baryard. He jumped on the horse jerked the reins, and the horse became rather frightened and reared up. Much to Uncle Bill's embarrassment, he fell off the horse into Cyrus Picken's pig pen and killed one of the pigs. Uncle Bill told Cyrus he would be back the following day to reimburse him for the pig---which he did. [5]
