Biography

In 1860 (17th of July), Frances (2) was living in Meredith with her parents Sherman (43), mother Sarah (35), and brother Frederick (9) in a home reportedly valued at $2000. ^[1]

In 1865, Frances (7) was living with her parents Sherman (48) and Sarah (40) and her brother Frederick J (14) in Meredith, Delaware, New York. Sherman was a farmer. ^[2]

In 1870 (13th of July), the family was in Meredith, consisting of Frances (12), Frederick (19), Sarah (44), and Sherman (53). Their house was now reportedly worth $4000 ^[3]

In 1875 (June 5th), Frances (17) was still living in Meredith with her parents Sherman (58), mother Sarah (50), brother Frederick (24) and a 50 year-old hired hand named David Hammond. ^[4]

Daughter of Sherman D. Mitchell and Sarah Wakeman, wife of John W. Atkin, whom she married on February 9, 1883 in Milford Center, New York, and mother of Edith E. and Howard W. Atkin.

In 1880, Frances Mitchell, aged 22, a music teacher, was living in Meredith, Delaware, New York, in the home of her parents, Sherman Mitchell, aged 63, a farmer, and Sarah Mitchell, aged 55, with her brother, Frederick Mitchell, aged 29. ^[5]

In 1892, Frances Atkins, aged 35, a music teacher, was living in Middletown, Delaware, New York, with her husband, John Atkins, aged 37, and children, Edith Atkins, aged 9, and Howard Atkins, aged 8.

It appears that Frances and John separated between 1892 and 1900.

In 1900, Frances M. Mitchell, aged 41, a music teacher, married for 18 years, born October 1858, was living at 113 Hasbrouck Avenue, Kingston, Ulster, New York, with her daughter, Edith E. Mitchell, aged 17, also a music teacher, born May 1883. ^[6]
