Jane appears on the 1850 mortality schedule, it says she died in April, 1850 from dropsy, had been ill 100 days, aged 64 years, born in North Carolina.[5]
Deed dated 12 March 1851. Showing James Mitchell had moved to Taney Co., MO by that time. Two of Malinda';s brothers (Greenbury and Clavin Cloud) had already moved to Taney Co., MO prior to 1850 as the were enumerated in that county in 1850. however, James ; Malinda were still in Claiborne Co. in 1850, so they apparently moved to Taney Co. between that census and March 1851.
In the same year 1851, Stone Co. MO was formed from Taney Co. and the area they lived fell into the new county of Stone.
James Mitchel; Malinda Mitchel wife of said James Mitchel of Co. of Stone for sum of $1200 conveyed to Thomas E. Lee of Stone Co. 164 acres. James signed the deed, Malinda made her mark. This was in three parcels and I have the township, range, sections where this land was located. It was six miles due west of Crane, MO very near the Christian Co. line. The James River would have run thought this property.[6]
After selling the above land in 1856, this is probably when they moved into Christian Co., MO and lived north of Clever MO. They were enumerated in the 1860 census of Christina Co. MO in Polk Township.
When the Civil War broke out, they were still living in Christina Co. MO. James Mitchell and his family were strong Union people. He and his son-in-law, Isaac Teague, were in danger of their lives at all times according to Hilda Wade(Rex's Aunt). After the Confederates won the battle of Wilson's Creek, Hilda says many people followed General Siegel ( then Colonel) of the Union troops to Rolla. There were two Union forts at Rolla. Hilda says her grandmother (d/o of James and Malinda)said that when they went to Rolla, they put what they could in a wagon and drove the cattle they had. They turned the hogs loose as you cannot drive hogs. Neighbors who did not leave later told them that the bushwhackers came in and stole what was left in their house. Rolla is in Phelps Co. MO which is where James; Malinda's daughter, Elizabeth Mahulda Mitchell, married John Wesley Green, 16 Jan 1866. I ( Imogene Bennett) have a copy of the original license bond.
Letter from Imogene Bennet:
We saw Hilda last Sunday ( Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000) and I asked her about the middle name of James possibly being Monroe? She says no; on that---or at least she has never seen it that way. I've been searching for more than 31 years and Hilda started at least 15 years or more prior to that. She doesn't search now, but she was certainly thorough when she did. Hilda's grandmother, Elizabeth Mahulda, lived in her household when Hilda was young and she remembers the stories her grandmother told about the Civil War, etc.

In the 1860 census James (age 56) was in Polk Township, Christian, Missouri, United States.[7]

In the 1870 census James (age 66) was the head of household in Upton, Texas, Missouri, United States.[8]
