Vilhelm Moberg was the Swedish author who shaped the popular image of Swedish emigration to North America with his four-part series The Emigrants published 1949-1959 and depicting the lives of a group of emigrants leaving Småland in 1850.
Karl Artur Wilhelm was born in Algutsboda parish 20 August 1898 to the soldier Carl Gottfrid Moberg and his wife Ida Charlotta Aronsdotter.[1][2] Like so many young Swedes at the time Vilhelm Moberg worked on farms and in the forest. He also worked as a glass blower, his home area having several glass works. However, Vilhelm was more studious and ambitious than the average youngster, and landed a few jobs as editor for local newspapers, which became the launch pad for his career as a writer.[3][4]
When Vilhelm Moberg married Margareta Sofia Törnqvist 22 September 1923, he was an editor in Alvesta.[5] In June 1934 the writer Vilhelm Moberg and his wife moved from Solna to Nacka with their four daughters.[6] In the census 1940 Vilhelm Moberg is registered as an author.[7]
Vilhelm Moberg started planning The Emigrants in 1947. In 1948 he went to America with his family. He spent the next four years mostly in the United States, in research and writing. The first book in the series was published in Sweden in 1949.[8]
At the time of the census 1970 Vilhelm Moberg and his wife lived in Grisslehamn,[9] where he died 8 August 1973.
