Richard (Moffatt) Moffett migrated from Ontario, Canada to New York, USA.
After making a move to New York state (and apparently opting to spell his last name "Moffett" instead of "Moffatt"), he worked as a cabinet maker, but also served in the Spanish-American War as a private in the US Army: initially in the 6th Artillery (1898-99),[4][5] then in the 19th Infantry (1899-1902).[6][7][1][8] (The 1900 US census found him in San Jose de Buenavista in the Philippine Islands.)[9]
Private Richard (Moffatt) Moffett served with the United States Army during the Spanish-American War. Service Started: Oct 14, 1898 Unit(s): 6th Artillery; 19th Infantry Service Ended: Jun 18, 1902
Following the war, he lived in Buffalo, NY, where he married Maude Evelyn Pierce (b. ca 1879) on Jan. 19, 1903.[10] Their first child, Iola M. Moffett, was born in the States about 1906. Richard made his living variously as a real estate agent[11] and as an insurance agent.[12] He invested in real estate himself at this time, purchasing a Tonawanda property mapped out for building lots in 1907.[13]
Richard and Maude returned to Ontario for the births of their next three children, all in Trenton:
Richard was a Trenton policeman at the time of Lettella's birth,[10] and its chief of police at the time of Erma's and Richard P's.[14][15] (On Nov. 2, 1914, Trenton Town Council approved his $85.00 salary.)[16] In between their births, however, Richard and family were back in Buffalo, where he was again selling real estate.[17]
By 1924, the family had moved from Buffalo to Rochester, where Richard filed for his military pension[18] and worked as a receiving clerk (1924),[19] a traveling clothing salesman (1925),[20] again as a clerk (1926),[21] as a manager (1926-30)[22][23][24] as a lineman? (1930),[25] as a door man (1931),[26] and as a detective (1934)![27]
Richard K. Moffett was admitted to the U.S. Veterans Hospital in Batavia, NY on Dec. 18, 1934, and died there on Jan. 11, 1935.[28][29] He was given a military funeral and buried in the Spanish-American War veterans' area of Rochester's Mount Hope Cemetery.[30][31]
