Alexander trained as a lawyer and was called to the bar, but never actually practiced law. He opened the Mechanics Bank, which eventually failed in 1879.
Alexander married Eliza Holmes, the daughter of the general manager of the Bank of Montreal, in 1855. They lived in Montreal and had a summer home in the Eastern Townships, where they farmed and kept horses.
