Birth
Hugh Montgomery was born about 1819 in Drumaghlis Townland in the Parish of Kilmore in County Down, Ireland (according to unsourced user entry on FamilySearch). He was the son of Hugh Montgomery, a farmer, and Mary Long.
Marriage
Rademon (First Kilmore) Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church
On 12 February 1840, Hugh married Ann Jane McRoberts at Crossgar in the Parish of Kilmore. (julie_g1 of "Connor Gardner family" tree originally shared this unsourced information on Ancestry.com. She also shared all the baptism records for their children and for the children of Margaret Montgomery and David Dunn.) Hugh and Ann were likely married in the (First Kilmore) Rademan Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church (17 Listooder Road, Crossgar, today). Their children would be baptized at this church.
Hugh and Ann Jane would have at least eight children together, seven of whom survived childhood. Their known children were:
Records show that Hugh worked as a labourer and as a sexton.
From 1841 to 1846, Hugh and Ann Jane lived in Listooder Townland in the Parish of Kilmore (according to baptism records for daughters Mary, Jane and Annie). Between 1848 and 1852, they lived in Drumaghlis Townland, also in the Parish of Kilmore (according to baptism records for daughters Isabella and Elizabeth). Between 1856 to 1883, Hugh and Ann Jane lived in Rademan Townland in the Parish of Kilmore, with their children (according to baptism records for children Margaret, Andrew and Ann, as well as Hugh's own death record) .
During the 1860s and 1870s, most of Hugh and Ann’s daughters married and left home. Their son Andrew emigrated to the United States in about 1881 where he married and would have three sons.
Hugh and Ann’s eldest daughter, Mary (Montgomery) Simpson, died from cancer in 1882. She was survived by her husband and four children aged eight to seventeen. Jane Montgomery would be the witness for her nephew Thomas Simpson’s marriage in 1885.
Hugh’s last decade of life seems to have been especially difficult, as his death record shows he was suffering from paralysis for his last six years.
Death
Hugh died from paralysis (6 years) and exhaustion (2 weeks) in 1883. On his death record, he was listed as a 64-year-old married labourer, residing at Rademan. His brother Andrew Montgomery of Drumaghlis was present at death) and was the informant for his death record. No medical attendant certified his death. Hugh ‘s death was registered in the Downpatrick registration district. [1] He was survived by his wife of over 40 years, six of his children and many grandchildren.
