Lauretta Mooers was born in 1848 in Northumberland, New Brunswick, Canada. She was the daughter of Thomas Mooers and Mary Bamford her father, Thomas, was 29, and her mother, Mary, was 29. She lost her mother when she was only 5 years old. She had eight brothers and seven sisters.
