"We are now troubling ourselves about John for fear he will have to go in the Army - he intended going to the Militiary Institute at Lexington, but he was too late in applying, the school was full. They are trying to establish a Military school at "Randolph Macon College." He has applied there, but has not heard yet." [Letter Patti Moore to Jane Wood 10 Feb 1862].
