Biography

Col. John Moore was a staunch Protestant and supporter of Cromwell during the Civil War. He was a signatory to the death warrent of King Charles Ist.

He was born about 1600 the son of Edward Moore and his wife Katherine Hockenhull [1]

In 1630 he was a Bailiff of Liverpool and in 1632 inherited on the death of his father Edward. In 1633 he became Mayor of Liverpool

1633 m. at Bispham Mary Rigby daughter of Alexander Rigby of Burgh and Leyton, by his wife Catherine Brabazon daughter of Sir Edward Brabazon [2] & [1]

He was a Col. of guards and in1643 was Appointed Governor of Liverpool [3] He defended the city for five days against the attack by Prince Rupert at the outset of the York March in June 1644, before finally escaping by sea. [4]

In 1646 he raised a new regiment and went to Ireland [5] as Governor of Dundalk in 1646 and of Dublin in 1647

1649 Regicide; signatory to the death warrent of King Charles Ist. [6] & [7]

He died in 1650 of plague at the siege of Tecroghan, Nr. Croghan, Co. Meath with a will dated 20 july 1649. His debts were estimated then in the region of £10,000 [8] & [1]

  5. Jane Moore (b.1640) -- Only one of the daughters survived. She married John Leigh before April. 1658
