Colonel Morgan was born about 1844[1] in Napoleon[2], Kentucky. He served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the US Civil War.
He stood about 5 feet and 8 inches tall with dark skin, brown eyes, and black hair.[2]
During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company K of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the second[3] regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 19 years old, single, and working as a tobacconist when he enlisted on 5 May 1863 from Cincinnati, Ohio. He went missing in action at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner on 18 July 1863 and is presumed killed in action.[1]
