Biography

Hew Ross Morrison was born on 21 July 1890 at Borgie, in the Parish of Tongue, Sutherland, Scotland. He was the 3rd of 4 sons of William Morrison and Jane McNeil. His father was listed as a general merchant on Hew’s birth certificate.

In 1891 Census, Hew is just 8 months old. Hew’s father William is listed as a general merchant and employer at Borgie. Hews mother Jane has 3 sons John, 3, Angie ( Angus James) 2 & Hew Ross, 8 months. His Aunt Jane and Jane Mackay are living at the house listed as general servants.

In1901 census, Hew Ross is 9. He and his 3 brothers John William 13, Angie James, 11, and Willie 6 are all listed as scholars. The family remains at Borgie. His father William is listed as 46, the School board clerk & treasurer. His mother Jane is 47 with house work as her occupation.

Hew’s occupation was listed as a farm servant on his death record.

Hew died on 19 September 1909 at the age of 19 at his parents home at Borgie Bridge in the parish of Tongue in Sutherland Scotland. The cause of death was a malignant tumour on his leg. He had been suffering for 8 months.

Some information is not verified but an initial contributor to the tree was Hew’s uncle, Dr Hew Morrison JP LLD (1850-1935) who, among other things, prepared and had published in 1911 a transcription of the Parish Register of Durness (Sutherland). Uncle Hew was Chief Librarian of the Edinburgh Public Library in the early 1900s. He was a friend of Andrew Carnegie and helped Carnegie set up his Carnegie libraries in Scotland.
