Richard, son of Richard Moys & Elizabeth Humphreys, was born 1 April 1698 in Croydon, Surrey, England. [1]
Richard and Martha Coysgarne were married 6 October 1720 in St. Nicholas, Sutton, Surrey, England [2] and they had at least 4 daughters. [3]
They moved to Shadwell, Middlesex, England before the birth of their second daughter, Martha, [4] where Richard worked in his trade as a plumber. [3]
Richard Moys signed his will on 12 September 1741 and it was proved on 30 September 1741. [3]
Last Will & Testament - 12 September 1741
In the Name of God Amen
I Richard Moys of the parish of Saint Paul Shadwell in the County of Middlesex plumber being very sick and weak of Body but of sound and disposing Mind Memory and understanding do make publish and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner following this is to say ffirst I do hereby give devise and bequeath unto each of my four Daughters Gulielma Maria Moys Martha Coysgarne Moys Ann Amelia Moys and Sarah Moys the Sum of five hundred pounds a peice to be paid them respectively as they shall severally attain their ages of twenty one years and in case of the Death of any or either of my said Daughters before they shall attain their said ages of twenty one years. Then the part or share of her or them so dying I do hereby give and bequeath to the Survivors or Survivor of them equally to be divided amongst them share and share alike as they shall severally and respectively attain their said ages of twenty one years as aforesaid And in case of the Death of all my said Daughters before they or any of them shall attain their said ages of twenty one years as aforesaid then shares of my said Daughters and every of them unto my affectionate Wife Martha her Executors Administrators and Assigns for ever.
Item I do hereby give and bequeath to my Brother in Law Mr. Edward Coysgarne one of my Executors herein after names the sum of ten pounds
Items I do hereby give and bequeath to my ffriend Captain Thomas Clifton another of my Executors herein after named the sum of ten pounds
Item I do hereby give and bequeath to my two Maid Servants that now live with me the sum of five pounds a peice for Mourning
Item I do hereby give and bequeath to Henry Kay of Croydon in the County of Surry my ffowling peice and every thing belonging to the same and also such part of my old clothes as my said Wife shall think proper to give unto him and I do also forgive and remit unto him the said Henry Kay all such sum and sums of Money as he the said Henry Kay shall owe and stand invested unto me at the time of my Decease
Item I do hereby forgive and remit unto Thomas Constable of Croydon aforesaid all and every such sum and sums of Money as he Thomas Constable shall owe and stand invested unto me at the time of my Decease And all the Rest Residue and Remainder of my Goods and Chattels Lands and Tenements Ready Money Book Debts Notes Bonds Securitys and all and every the Residue and Remainder of my Estate and Effects whatsoever and wheresoever I do give devise and bequeath the same and every part thereof unto my said Wife Martha her heirs Executors Adm-ors and Assigns for ever
And I do hereby name make constitute and appoint my said Wife Martha my said Brother in Law Edward Coysgarne and my said ffriend Thomas Clifton joynt Executors of this my last Will and Testament thereby revoking disannulling and making void all former and other Wills by me at any time heretofore made and I do ratify confirm and declare this to be my only last Will and Testament
In Witness where I the said Richard Moys the Testate have to this my last Will and Testament set my Hand and Seal the twelfth day of September in the fifteenth year of the Reign of King George the Second over Great Britain etc in the year of Our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and fforty one ~ Rich-d Moys ~ Signed sealed published and declared by the said Testator Richard Moys as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of Us who at the Request and in the presence of the said Testator and of each other have subscribed our Names as Witnesses ~ John Cooper, W: Martin, Jos:Scaton Jun.r
This will was proved at London on the Thirtieth Day of September in the year of Our Lord One Thousand and Seven Hundred and fforty one Before the Worshipfull Robert Chapman Doctor of Laws Surrogate to the Right Worshipfull John Bettesworth also Doctor of Laws Master Keeper of Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted By Martha Moys Widow the Relict of the deceased and Edward Coysgarne two of the Executors named in the said Will To whom was granted Administration of all and singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of the said Deceased being sworn duly to administer the same Thomas Clifton the other Exectuor named in the said Will first renouncing the Execution thereof.[3]
Both Richard and his father, Richard, signed their surname as "Moys", although record scribes have entered various other versions... Moise, Moyse, etc.
