Christopher Murray was born in early July 1848 in Baltrasna, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. He is the son of James Murray (a farm labourer) and Anne Brennan. He was baptised in Mullingar parish on 13th July. His sponsors were Christopher Brennan (possibly an uncle) and a woman called Ann (surname illegible).[1] He is known to have an older brother called Thomas and a younger sister called Elizabeth. No other siblings have been found.
Christopher married Ellen Glynn in Mullingar Cathedral on 5th May 1873. His employment at the time was listed as a "servant". The witnesses were named as Laurence Bradley and Biddy Cormack.[2][3][4]They had eleven children (six girls and five boys) but one of the boys, Thomas, died as an infant. Their other ten children reached adulthood. On many of the birth records, Christopher's occupation is given as a "Labourer", most likely a farm labourer as they lived in a rural area.
In 1901, Christy was a 53 year old labourer living at Patrick St, Mullingar with his wife and two youngest sons Christy (age 11) and Charles (age 5). [5][6][7]Ellen, his wife, died in 1903 at the age of just 48 years from "asthenia" (general weakness and exhaustion).
In 1911 Christy was 64 years old and living at Hibernian Ave, North Dock, Dublin with his daughter Annie and her family. He was described as an unemployed labourer.[8][9][10] In both census years it is recorded that Christy cannot read.
Christopher may have died in the District Hospital, Mullingar on 24th February 1913. The death record is likely but unconfirmed (see research notes). [11][12] His burial location is unknown.
Research Notes
Discrepancy of marriage date:
The church register states that Christopher and Ellen married on 5th May but the civil marriage record states the marriage was on 18th May. Names of the sponsors are the same on both records. The church register has several marriages listed for 5th May and then several more immediately below dated 18th May. The incorrect date for Christopher and Ellen's marriage may have been transferred to the civil record by a clerical error.
Uncertainty of Christopher's date of death:
There is nothing that specifically identifies this Christopher on the death record at Mullingar in 1913. However, the approximate age, the occupation of labourer and marital status of widower are correct. The only way to verify if this is the correct death record would be if a burial record is identified with the same date of death.
Burial record:
It is not known where Christopher and his wife Ellen are buried. It is probably in the main Mullingar town cemetery but further research is needed.
