Biography

Mary was born around 1804 in County Sligo, Ireland. She and her husband, Thomas Ryan, came to Canada from Ireland, with their children, following the time of the Great Famine. What little we know of the Ryans is in Margaret Killoran Prendergast's written family history for her grandchildren: The Story of the Family. [1]

"Grandmother Ryan was tall, slight, white-haired, with fine white skin, white delicate hands, her head immaculately capped in white - in fact everything about her seemed to be white except the intense blue of her eyes. She drifted into a graceful serene old age and, surrounded by the tender care of Aunt Maria, died at the age of 78."

Dates are taken from the Ryan tombstone in St. Marys Cemetery, St. Marys, Ontario, Canada. Her name is inscribed as Mary Nangle and she died "June 24, 1882", aged 78 years. [2]

In 1871, Hugh Treanor and Margaret (Ryan), and children Peter, Thomas, Hugh and Mary, were living in the same dwelling as Margaret's parents, Thomas and Mary Ryan. [3]

In 1881, Mary Ryan, age 76 and widowed, was living in St. Marys, Ontario with daughters Maria (age given as 30 - who didn’t like to admit her age) and Catherine, age 40 and widowed. (Was Catherine Noon(e) enumerated twice, both in Seaforth with Winnifred Killoran and with her mother on 20th April?)[4]

Mary Ryan had her death recorded in St. Marys, Ontario, Canada in 1882 as 24 June. [5]
