The sad news of the death of Mr. James Nesbit, Sr. cast a gloom over our community. He died of pneumonia in Rome, Georgia, on Wednesday at 1:00 o'clock p.m. in the 75th year of his age. He left home a few days before to visit Tennessee on business, and was taken sick at Chattanooga, Tenn, but came back to Rome, GA, where he was confined to his bed several days before his death. The news of his death was received by his family by a telegraphic dispatch before receiving any news of his illness. His remains were brought on by Captain Franklin Woodruff of Rome, GA, formerly of this County, who was an old friend of the deceased.

The funeral services were held in the Baptist Church on Friday the 2_th last, Reverend Whitford Smith, D.D., who presented the funeral sermon, paid an eloquent and deserved tribute to the character of the deceased. The large attendance upon the funeral services attested to the respect and esteem in which he was held in the community.

James was mentioned on a memorial in Magnolia Cemetery, Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States with a death date of 24 Mar 1875.[8]

Research Notes

There is no documentation or source that backs up the assumption he was born in Laurens County as claimed on Find a Grave. There is no James Nesbitt found listed in the census for Laurens, South Carolina.

James Madison Nesbitt is another branch James Madison Nesbitt (abt.1808-1861) .

Speculative fathers have no proof/source documentation for any- some say Samuel Nesbitt (1766-1824) and Jonathan Nesbitt (1736-aft.1832). Find a grave that claims he is the son of Samuel Alexander Nesbitt with no documentation. There is also a generation between Jonathan and this James on Find A Grave. Middle name Madison is unsourced. Another possibility is James Nesbitt (1768-1838) but this also has issues.

Conflicting information.
