"The Nettles families followed their kins lady, Mrs. B. B. Payne, to Ar kansas, and it was said that at one time around the turn of the century , three-fourths of the population in this Greenway, Pollard and Piggott a rea were Paynes and Nettles. Boswell Blackwell Payne married Miss Nancy N ettle (1817-1897) in Tennessee in 1836 and came to the Greenway communi ty in the late 1830's or early 1840's. Mrs. Payne was a licensed midwif e before coming to Arkansas and immediately became a great boon to this d octor-less community. She assisted at the birth of babies all over the c ommunity, often going many miles, at times riding double behind the per son coming for her unless a horse was provided. Her fee for any distanc e was never over $2.00 and many times her services were donated." Her p arents were Jesse and Catherine Nettles. It seems from my working papers that all the Nettles in Clay County cam e from the same line.
