Biography

William was born in 1807. He was the son of Jesse Nettles Jr. and Rebecca Cantey. William married Henrietta Haynesworth. He was Capt in Company H., 5th Regiment, South Carolina Cavalry at Camp Hampton, Jan. 2, 1862. Because of many furloughs on account of illness, he was finally retired from the service in 14 Nov 1862. ^[1]

William was born in 1807. He was the son of Jesse Nettles and Rebecca Cantey. ^[2] He married Henrietta Haynsworth. In the 1850 census ^[3] William and his wife Henrietta are living in the Sumter District of South Carolina with five children: Josiah H. age 14, Henrietta C. age 10, William A. age 7, Ann R. age 5, and Sarah C. age 3. Also in the household is a John M. Nettles listed as 21 or 24. In another household listed consecutively in the census are William's two sisters, Harriet and "Hulda." In the 1860 census ^[4] William is living in South Carolina with his wife "H. H." and eight children listed as "J. H." age 23, "H. C." age 20, "W. H." age 18, "A. R." age 15, "S. C." age 12, "H. J." age 9, "C. F." age 7, and "M. H." age 4.

William passed away in 1885 and is buried with his wife Henrietta in the Nettles Cemetery in Privateer, Sumter County, South Carolina. ^[5]

Research Notes

• In the 1850 Slave Schedules there is a William Nettles living in the Sumter District, Sumter, South Carolina owning 15 slaves, including one 11-year old mulatto girl. ^[6] It is not clear that this is the same William Nettles.
