Story Of Elotere's Death, by her Gr Gr Grandson

According to what I have been told, on the night of October 24, 1913, she and her youngest child, Octavia "Tavie" Savant (ancestress of several Bushnells in this group), went to the home of one of Elotere's older children, Alice Savant Fontenot (wife of Arteon Fontenot), to eat duck gumbo. When returning home, Elotere & her daugher, Tavie, were walking in a field (in the area now known as King's Farm), when Elotere fell to the ground (it was later determined that she was having a heart attack). In those days, men, women and even older children, often carried small pistols with them, in case of a wild animal, etc., in the dark. When my great-great-grandmother fell, Tavie took a small pistol and fired shots into the air. People in the houses around heard the shots, and ran to the site. Elotere died that night. My great-great-grandfather, Lucius Savant, had a giant wooden cross erected on the very site where his wife fell, in that field. According to Ida Savant Ford (now the last living grandchild of Lucius & Elotere), the cross stood in that spot until years later, when "other people" (I believe the land was rented out) were planting that field, and they removed the cross (long after Lucius & his children were deceased). Elotere Nevils Savant was buried in Indian Village Cemetery, but Lucius, according to his request, was buried (in 1929) in King's Farm, beside his father Ortere. [[1]]
