Biography

Cross of St George
Josiah Newsholme was born in England.

Josiah was born in 1676 and baptized on 5 Sep of that year.[1][2][3] He married Elizabeth Hill on 24 Jan 1705.[4]

Research Notes

That the two baptismal records seem to disagree on location with one listing Northowram and another Birstall, the cause seems to be that the records were once on the chapel located in Coley and the administration of the area served by Coley are now in the two current locations. The Northowram record mentions 'Heckenwyke' and Wyke was an area midway between Northowram and Birstall. A review of the Northowram Registers might help in understanding the jurisdiction of that parish.
Before 1750, the English calendar ran from March 25 to March 25 and dates between Jan 1 and March 25 are in the next year when using the current calendar.

Hi Thom, the reason for the two baptism places is that the Coley/Northowram register was also a personal notebook kept by the dissenting preacher Oliver Heywood and he noted baptisms for his followers which had been done in other places, so the actual place would be Birstall in this instance I think. There may be something in the introduction to the published edition about this. Link to baptism entry page - https://archive.org/details/nonconformistreg00byuheyw/page/29 The place referred to is Heckmondwike, which was in Birstall parish but on the border with Batley.
