NEWTON, JOSEPH ROBERT, 77, of Virginia Beach, VA, died June 5, 2011.

He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph E. and Rebecca Hayden Newton.

Born in Lebanon Junction, KY on April 11, 1934, he graduated from Lebanon Junction High School. He retired from the US Navy with 21 years of service as a lieutenant commander. He served with distinction and dedication on many ships and duty stations east and west coast with a tour of duty in Vietnam. Upon retirement he was employed by QED Systems as a project manager, Stanwick Corporation as divisional vice president and CRS Technology as president and owner. He was a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers, Military Officers Association of America, and Hampton Roads Chapter of MOAA. He was an active member of the Catholic Church of St. Mark.

He is survived by his loving wife, Julia Dale Hardy Newton of 54 years; his son, Robert Michael; daughters, Patricia Newton White and Julia Marie Staylor; four brothers; two sisters; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be conducted at the Catholic Church of St. Mark, 1505 Kempsville Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23464 Thursday, June 9, 2011, at 7 p.m. The family will receive friends for one hour following the Mass. His ashes will be interned in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
