Biography

Sydney was born in 1887. He was the son of Clement Nicholas and Elizabeth Green.

Educated at St. Mary's College, Madras, India. Served 5 year Course Apprenticeship on the Madras Railway, later called the M&S M Railway. Started working on 1/7/1905.

In 1914 Married Dorothy Louise, a teacher at Presentation Convent, Madras. Together with Dorothy he had four children: Norman Nicholas 3/10/1918 - 1/3/2006 Marion Theresa Nicholas 1920 - 12/3/2010 Alan Sylvester Nicolas Sheila Nicholas

During World War 1 he was Assistant Inspector of Munitions in the Railway workshops where 2.5 and 13 pounder shells were made. He reverted to Railway duties after the war and was promoted to Asst. Forman and transferred to the Meter Gauge Railway in 1928. He was later transferred to Headquarters, Perambur, Madras and retired as Forman Erecting Dhop.

During World War 2 he was commissioned 1942-1944 and retired from Railway Dof I service. He was recalled and recommissioned as Adjutant and Quartermaster and finally released in 1946 from Military Service.

He later joined Parry & Co Ltd Sugar Factory, Nellikuppam as Transport Officer from 1946 -1953.

Sydney emigrated to the UK in 1954 but returned to India in 1958.

He passed away in 1966.
