Biography

Anne was born in 1830. She was baptised in Abbotshall on 21 March 1830. Her parents are recorded as James Nicholson and Euphemia Raeburn. [1]

In January 1850 Ann married Robert Jaffrey Spittal (1827-1868). "Robert Spittal and Anne Nicholson both of the Parish of Abbotshall were publicly proclaimed in order to marriage on Sabbath the 20th Jan 1850" [2]

In 1851 Robert(23) Blacksmith (Master) born Arngask, Fife and Ann(21) born Kilconquhar, Fife live at Stobbs Cross, Markinch.[3]

Daughter Euphemia (Spittal) Berwick (1852-1936) was born 3 July 1852 in Portmoak. [4]

Daughter Christina Spittal (1855-1866) was born 21 November 1855 in Portmoak. [5]

Son James Spittal (1857-1929) was born 21 November 1857 in Kinross, Kinross-shire. [6]

Son Robert Philp Spittal (1859-1891) was born 29 September 1859 in Kinross [7]

In 1861 the family live in Main Street, Kinross. In the house are Robert (33) Smith (employing 1 man and 1 boy) born Arngask, Ann (31) born Earlsferry, Euphemia (8) born Abbotshall, Christina (5) born Kinross, James (3), born Kinross and Robert (1) born Kinross. Also living with them were two servants Robert Pollert a Smith Journeyman and Duncan Breingan a Smith's Apprentice. [8]

Daughter Georgina Spittal (1862-1863) was born 29 December 1862 at Head of Town, Kinross. Her parents are recorded as Robert Spittal, Smith and Anne Spittal m.s. Nicholson 26 January 1850 Abbotshall [9]

Baby daughter Georgina died 12 April 1863 in Kinross. [10]

Daughter Mary Anne (Spittal) Colston (1864-1901) was born 18 October 1864 at Head of Town, Kinross. Her parents are recorded as Robert Spittal, Smith and Anne Spittal m.s. Nicholson 26 January 1850 Abbotshall, [11]

Son John Ruthven Spittal (1866-1935) was born 10 July 1866 in Kinross. [12]

Son Thomas Spittal (1867-1936) was born 16 Auguest 1867 in Kinross. [13]

Husband Robert died on 12 October 1868 near Cresswell, Kinross age 40. He is recorded as a Blacksmith married to Anne m.s. Nicholson. His parents are Philip Spittal, Carrier and Christian Spittal m.s. Martin. The death was registered by his son James Spittal[14]

Son Peter Nicholson Spittal (1868-1945) was born posthumously on 22 November 1868 in Kinross. [15]

In 1871 Ann and her family live in High Street, Kinross. In the house are Ann (38) born Earlsferry, Euphemia (17), Mill Worker born Kirkcaldy, James (13), Mill Worker born Kinross and Robert (10), Mill Worker born Kinross, Mary Anne (6) born Kinross, John R (4) born Kinross, Thomas (3) born Kinross and Peter (2) born Kinross. [16]

In 1881 Ann and her family live in Markinch. In the house are Ann (51) born Earlsferry, Mary Anne (17) Factory Worker born Kinross, Thomas (14) Miner born Kinross and Peter (12) Scholar born Kinross. [17]

In 1891 Ann (62) lives at Kirkforthar Fues House in Markinch. She is living on Private Means and has an 18 year old Boarder, Charlotte Ramsay, a Factory Worker. [18]

In 1901 Ann (72) lives at Milldeans, Kennoway and is a Worker on Farm [19]

Ann died on 10 December 1910 in Oakfield, Kelty in the Parish of Beath age 80. She was the widow of Robert Spittal, Blacksmith. Her parents are recorded as James Nicholson, Coalminer (deceased) and Nicholson m.s. Raeburn (deceased). The death was registered by her son John Spittal. [20]
