Daniel Nicholson was born in New South Wales, Australia

Daniel was born on Thursday 6 January 1859 in Limestone Creek, in the district of Yass, New South Wales. The 'McBean' part of his name was due to a grazier named William McBean who settled in the Yass area. He along with several others including Daniel's father Donald were the main instigators in the establishment of the Presbyterian Church in Yass (where Daniel was baptised).[1][2]

He presumably moved with his parents to Bushman's Lead, New South Wales, in 1871. They made the move just after gold had been discovered, when the town 'consisted of a butcher's shop, a bakery and a few houses which the hardy pioneers had constructed from the timber around them.[3][4]'

He may have attended the wedding of his brother in the marriage of James Brown Nicholson and Lydia Horsnell in St. Michaels and St. Johns Catholic Cathedral on Sunday 20 August 1871 in Bathurst, New South Wales. Lydia was ten years younger than James.. James and Lydia went on to have 12 known children together.[5]

His mother died 22 May 1874 at the age of 56. Daniel was aged 15 when this happened.[6][7]

He may have attended the wedding of his sister in the marriage of Michael Bourke and Susannah Alletta Nicholson in a Wesleyan Methodist ceremony in her father's house on Saturday 26 December 1874 in Parkes, New South Wales. Michael and Susannah went on to have five children over the next 10 years.[8]

He may have attended the wedding of his sister in the marriage of John William Aplett and Frances Nicholson in a Presbyterian ceremony on Saturday 18 November 1876 in Forbes, New South Wales, \-33.39000,148.009000. The marriage took place at the home of Henry Clancy in Browne Street. Frances was the sister of the runner that John had recently beaten at Parkes. Frances and John went on to have about nine children together.[9][10]

He married Catherine Ann O'Reilly, a dressmaker, daughter of Henry Ernest LeClerc O'Reilly and Catherine Anne Mahoney, in Tambo Court House on Tuesday 16 March 1886 in Tambo, Queensland. He was 27 and his wife Catherine was 23. When Catherine married outside of the Church she and her family were never acknowledged by either of her parents... Catherine and Daniel went on to have seven children together.[11][12] He was a labourer in June 1893.[13]

His father died 3 November 1899 at the age of 87. Daniel was aged 40 when this happened. In 1902 he returned to Cobar, New South Wales, \-31.5,145.84, for a short time before returning to Queensland.[14]

His wife Catherine died June 1902 at the age of 39, leaving him a widower aged 43. After Catherine died, Daniel apparently didn't help raise the children; they were fostered or looked after by family and friends in the Winton and Kyuna district. There is some suggestion that their grandmother never acknowledged her grandchildren, yet according to the birth certificates she assisted with at least some of the births.[15] Daniel lived in 1903 in Bushams Arms Hotel, in Kyuna, Queensland.[16] He was a bartender in 1903 in Bushams Arms Hotel, in Kyuna, Queensland.[17] He was a labourer in 1913.[18] Daniel lived in 1913 in Duchess, Queensland.[19] Daniel lived in 1915 in Warnambool Downs station, in Winton, Queensland.[20] He was a stockman in 1915.[21] Catherine Ann O'Reilly only recalls seeing her father Daniel Malcolm McBean Nicholson once, just before she turned 21.[22] He was a labourer in November 1921.[23]

Daniel died on 6 November 1921 in District Hospital, in Charters Towers, Queensland, aged 62 a strangulated liguinal hernia, septic peritonitis.[24] He was buried on 8 November 1921 in Charters Towers Cemetery, in Charters Towers, Queensland.[25]
