Biography

He was born on 26 June 1846 (according to his death certificate) or 1844 (according to the cited Ancestry family trees, and the Find a grave memorial), to David Nickel and Sarah McGowan. He was born in Pennsylvania (Mount Holly Springs, Cumberland, Pennsylvania, USA, according to the cited Ancestry family trees). ^[1]

According to his Find a grave memorial, he served in the 19th Pennsylvania Cavalry, from 7 July 1863 to 14 May 1866. ^[2]

He married Francis Rebecca Bear ("Fannie"). ^[3]

He was a laborer. ^[4]

On 14 August 1880, James N Nickel applied from New Jersey for a pension (application 409,510), which he received (certificate 743,599). He applied for an increase in pension on 5 April 1907. ^[5]

He died on 11 January 1924, in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, of apoplexy, due to arteriosclerosis. On 14 January 1924, he was buried in Springville Cemetery, Boiling Springs, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. ^[6]
