Biography
Jan Nieuwenhuijs was a Dutch painter and graphic artist associated with the post-war experimental art movement. He studied at the Rijksnormaalschool voor Teekenonderwijzers and the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam.
In 1948 Nieuwenhuijs was one of the founding members of the Experimental Group in Holland, which soon became part of the European avant-garde CoBrA movement, although he left the group in 1949. His work is known for its expressive, imaginative style incorporating figurative and fantastical elements rather than pure abstraction.
Nieuwenhuijs exhibited widely in Europe throughout his career and remained true to the expressive ideals of the early CoBrA movement until his death. [1]
