Theodore was born in 1840, the son of Theodore George and Francis Louisa (Hill) Nixon, in Hancock County, Mississippi where he was raised.
When the Civil War broke out Theodore was around 21 years of age and immediately volunteered to fight for the Confederacy. He joined the Mississippi 3rd Infantry Regiment that served along the Mississippi Gulf coast and then became part of the Confederate defensive force during the Siege of Vicksburg on the Mississippi River. The unit later fought a delaying action against General Sherman during his "March to the Sea".
It was during the war that Theodore married Susan Seal (or Seale), the daughter of Andrew Jackson Seale (Sr) and Susan Pinice Willis, who was from Hancock County as well. Once the war was over Theodore and Susan had the following children:
Jabez Bingham Nixon (1868–1940)
Ella Nixon (1871– )
Daniel Webster Nixon (1872–1936)
Frances L. "Fannie" (Nixon) Clarke (1872–1950)
Theodore was a farmer to provide for his family. Sometime between the birth of his youngest child Fannie in 1872 and the 1880 US Census where Susan is listed as a widow, Theodore died. No death or burial records have been found.
