Albert's father died in 1894 when he was four, his mother re-married in 1898 however Albert did not get on with his step-father so in August 1910, at the age of 21 Albert travelled to London to join the ship 'Corinthic' [5]bound for New Zealand.[6] Albert's cousin, Alfred Wade's uncle was living in Gisborne in Hawkes Bay so that was where Alfred went on arrival in Wellington. His good friend and cousin Alfred Wade joined him in Gisborne in 1912.[7]

Of historical interest, among the passengers on that sailing were Dr Wilson of Captain Scott's Antarctic expedition as well as Mrs Wilson and Mrs Scott. They disembarked in Hobart.[8] About this time the Terra Nova was on it's way to New Zealand.[9]

Between 1914 and 1915 Albert (age about 24) was living in Peel St., Gisborne, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand.[10]

On 2 January 1915, Albert enlisted in Trentham, Wellington as a Private (#10/1936) with the Wellington Infantry, B Company as part of the 9th Hawkes Bay Regiment 4th Reinforcements . On 17 April 1915, he shipped overseas. Thinking they were going to join the war in France they were somewhat surprised to find themselves in Egypt awaiting deployment. He joined the Battalion in the Dardanelles on 9 June 1915. On the 20th after being called up to target a sniper his rifle was hit by shrapnel from a bomb (grenade) and he was wounded about the eyes. As a result, he lost his right eye and was shipped to the Valletta Hospital in Malta on the Hospital Ship Soudan. On the 7th of July, he was sent on the Letitia to England where he received further treatment. After a period of convalescence, he was repatriated home to New Zealand on the ship "Rotorua" and was struck off the strength of the NZEF on 16 December 1915 and finally discharged in New Zealand on 15 March 1916.[11] On his discharge, Albert went to Little River, Banks Peninsula where he kept bees with his friend Tom Winter.[11]

In 1919 Albert (age about 29) was living in Upper Riccarton, Canterbury, New Zealand. Apiarist.[12]

When Albert was 30 he married Emily Caukwell on 23 October 1919 [13][14] in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand.
The couple had 5 children:

  • Ronald Francis Norton (1925 -1926)
  • Peggy Irene Norton (1926 - )
  • June Valerie Norton (1928 - 2012)

In January 1923 when Albert and his family were living in Little River, Banks Peninsula his apiary was caught up in a tragic disaster when a landslide which killed two men swept through his apiary demolishing half of it.[15]

In 1928 Albert (age about 38) was living in Wainihinihini, Westland, New Zealand. Apiarist.[16]

Albert's wife, Emily, died in 1956 aged 60.
