He joined the Battalion in the Dardanelles on 9 June 1915. On the 20th after being called up to target a sniper his rifle was hit by shrapnel from a bomb (grenade) and he was wounded about the eyes. As a result, he lost his right eye and was shipped to the Valletta Hospital in Malta on the Hospital Ship Soudan. On the 7th of July, he was sent on the Letitia to England where he received further treatment. After a period of convalescence, he was repatriated home to New Zealand on the ship "Rotorua" and was struck off the strength of the NZEF on 16 December 1915 and finally discharged in New Zealand on 15 March 1916.[11]
On his discharge, Albert went to Little River, Banks Peninsula where he kept bees with his friend Tom Winter.[11]
